Co-financed PhD projects: Spring 2008 call.

Now the next round of co-funded scholarships has been announced by the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation (FI). In 2007 FOOD obtained funding for 7 co-funded scholarships KU, DTU and AU. This year we expect to obtain funding for 20 co-funded scholarships! FOOD have already been in contact with several scientists presenting their project ideas! This year we also expect to include scholarship applications from SDU!

The Call:

* 330 Co-funded stipends (Samfinansierede stipendier). Financial model: 1/3 from FI and 2/3 from all other partners (except Det Frie Forskningsråd).  See call on http://fi.dk/site/forside/soeg-stoette/opslag-stoettemuligheder/opslag-2008/opslag-samfinansierede-stipendier-2008/samfinansierede-stipendier-2008

In 2007 applications for co-funding had to go through the faculties/PhD schools. In 2008, the procedure this year resembles the one used in 2005 and 2006, meening it is the individual research schools that can apply - and not the faculties / PhD schools (graduate schools).

The FOOD application:

Leif Skibsted will as head of FOOD organize an application for all interested members of FOOD. The application will be multidisciplinary and inter-institutional and across the various fields of science. The application will follow FOOD*s existing set of procedures for evaluation of projects and applicants. FOOD will in these procedures take into consideration the different financial situations in the different scientific environments. The application will be centred around and between the 5 existing research themes in FOOD:

* Nutrition and Health.

* Food Quality.

* New Technologies and Analyses.

* Food Microbiology: Safety and Functionality.

* Food, Market and Society.

See description of research themes here.

The deadline for the application is 30 May 2008. But in order to compile the overall application, FOOD need project proposals for projects to be carried out no later than 15 May 2008 in order to get the overall application compiled.

If you want to participate in the application, please submit the following to FOOD:

- A project decription in the attached form (English only). Please emphasize cross-cutting aspects in the description! We accept preliminary project descriptions at this stage.

- A preliminary budget for the project. A draft for the budget can be downloaded here medio April. We do not need a confirmed and signed budget before we have received the funding from FI.

Please note that the host department needs to approve all project proposals.

Funding scheeme:

In short, there are two basic models for co-funding:

1) You have 2/3 of a full scholarship (approx. DKK 1.100.000). FOOD will apply FI for 1/3 (DKK 550.000).

2) You have 1/3 of a full scholarship (approx. DKK 550.000). FOOD will apply for co-funding from FI (DKK 550.000). You must then contact your Department/University to apply for additional co-funding (normally 1/3 - DKK 550.000). If the project is anchored at LIFE, LIFE has confirmed that it will try to co-fund all such projects. FOOD will ask LIFE for confirmation.

Please note that the total cost of a project is approx. DKK 1.700.000 depending on the actual wage level of the student, tuition fee at the individual university/graduate school (PhD school) etc. FOOD and FI can not cover any economic loss due to underbudgetting. Usually it is the duty of the host department to cover such costs.

Your own contribution can be pooled from various sources, except from the Danish Council for Independent Research. FOOD will evaluate all project proposals and only include those in the application that are within LMC scope and strategy and within the frame set up by FI for the call. All students employed at the projects must be a member of FOOD. The proposal and the confirmed budget must be sent by e-mail to Lars Holm Rasmussen lhr(at)life.ku.dk no later than 15 May 2008. Any questions can also be directed to Lars.
